Oversize Load on US-6 over Loveland Pass in Colorado

June 21: Golden, Colorado (just west of Denver).

We are in Clear Creek City Park N39° 45.197' W105° 13.193' in Golden, Colorado. The campground is located on the south side of 10th street at the end of the road. Clear Creek City Campground is one of the nicest (location wise) campgrounds you can stay in (our opinion). located on Clear Creek 3-blocks from downtown Golden. They have paved interior roads with small backin sites (mature trees are so wonderful); 50-amps, water and sewer, $28.91 per-night 303-278-1437. There is a 2-week max stay before you have to leave the park and they do not take reservations.Exit for Oversize Loads from I-70 to US-6

Loveland Pass

Westbound Oversize Loads on I-70 must exit I-70 here. Anything over 13-feet 5-inches tall will not fit through Eisenhower Tunnel. I think that the 13'5" limit has been increased to 13'10" now but I am not certain. What I do know is that "Oversize" loads on I-70 must exit and take US-6 over Loveland Pass and the Continental Divide. Eisenhower Tunnel on I-70 is at 11,158 ft while Loveland Pass on US-6 is 11,992 ft..

Don't you know truckers with oversize loads love to climb the extra 834 ft to get over Loveland Pass with their "oversize load".

Oversize loads can not get through Eisenhower Tunnel on I-70 because of the 13'5" height restriction.

Oversize loads such as these have to exit I-70 and bypass Eisenhower Tunnel on US 6 that traverses Loveland Pass over the Continental Divide in Colorado.

It is an exciting detour for these big-rig jockeys. They gear down and move at less than 10-mph. This trucker wasn't taking any chances with his giant load.

Look closely in this picture and you will see an 18-wheeler with an oversize load creeping down Loveland Pass on US-6. As you can tell he is on a steep grade and does not want that oversize load get rolling. He knows it might be difficult if not impossible to stop. There is a switchback he has to negotiate then he will be heading toward us. As you can see we are very near the Continental Divide at Loveland Pass.

The oversize load in the above picture is negotiating a hairpin turn in in this picture. It was one of those 15-mph hairpins. You know that he has to have that big heavy rig moving slowly down that grade in order to negotiate this hairpin turn.

These fellows have nerves of steel. and a lot of patience.

In a few minutes we were nearing Loveland Pass where those trucks had just been. At the summit we watch as this group of teens frolic on the trail along the summit of Loveland Pass.

This is a view of I-70 from US-6 the route those oversize loads have to use to get around Eisenhower Tunnel. I can assure you that is a long steep grade to have to pull an oversize load up.
