We were intrigued by this rock formation. It was certainly strange. We are located between Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks along Grassy Lake Road. It could be volcanic since we are in the southern end of the violent volcanic activity that created Yellowstone. It could be sedimentary.

I think this burned area happened in the 1988 Yellowstone fire season when so much of Yellowstone burned. Although this picture was taken on Grassy Lake Road just south of Yellowstone National Park.

Snow in mid-July along Grassy Lake Road west of Flagg Ranch & between Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks

This chunk of snow was left over from this winter. It is a bit unusual since it is mid-July. We were at around 7,000 feet of elevation on Grassy Lake Road. There is plenty of snow in the higher elevations ...... 8,000 feet and above.

We passed a good number of people camping along Grassy Lake Road in places that were not designated campgrounds. I say "designated" meaning that there was no sign saying it was a campsite and there was no pit toilet like in the designated camping areas.

Polecat Creek is located about one mile west of Flagg Ranch and passes under Grassy Lake Road on its way to join the Snake River. There is a 2.3 mile hiking trail that loops along Polecat Creek that is a popular hike for those so inclined.
