We are still falling off the Wind River Range when Joyce took this picture but as you can see we are almost off the Wind River Range. In a few miles we will arrive at Moran Junction and turn south toward Jackson Hole and Gros Ventre National Park campground near Kelly where we will be staying.
Moran Junction sign
Moran Junction is not much more than this sign and a post office.
But it is an important landmark in this region. Moran Junction is a major junction with US-26 going east across the Wind River Range and Togwotee Pass to Dubois and Riverton. To the north is Jackson Lake Lodge, Colter Bay Village, Flag Ranch and the south entrance to Yellowstone National Park. To the south is Jackson Hole, the Grand Teton Visitor Center and the Jackson Hole airport.
A mile or so south of Moran Junction
This picture was taken a mile or so south of Moran Junction on US-26 that goes to Jackson Hole. This is the area where the Buffalo Fork of the Snake River crosses US-26 just before joining the Snake River.
Buffalo herd in Grand Teton National Park a few miles east of Moran Junction
You can count on this herd of buffalo being close enough to US-26 south of Moran Junction. Sometimes they are grazing in this area to the east of US-26, sometimes they are causing buffalo jams because they are squatting or crossing US-26 and on occasion they are on the west side of US-26. There is a large pullout along here that is always fill of visitors that enjoy being this close to wild buffalo.
