Wind River & Absaroka Mountain Ranges

We are experiencing visual overload as we make our way along US-26 as we approach Togwotee Pass high in the Absaroka Mountains of Wyoming.

I am mesmerized by the horizontal laying sedimentary rocks at this elevation. That entire section of sedimentary rock rode the uplift straight up during the mountain building process.

There is so much snow on the ground for late June. Everything is so beautiful it takes your breath away.

Totally awesome horizontal layers of sedimentary rock exposed at the top of the Absaroka Mountain Range as we cross over Togwotee Pass on US-26.

The Wind River Range and Absaroka Mountain Ranges merge at Union Pass just south of where we are near the Continental Divide and Togwotee Pass on US-26 between Dubois and Moran Junction in the Tetons.

While we are experiencing visual overload my mind is not dealing with flat layers of sedimentary rock that have been uplifted thousands of feet from the valley floor. This whole region had to be uplifted in order for those sedimentary layers to still be laying horizontally at this altitude.

You can tell this is sedimentary rock by the horizontal streaks of snow that follow the different layers of sedimentary rock.

We are currently in the Absaroka Mountain Range but the mountains to our south on the horizon are part of the Wind River Range that stretches north to south from South Pass on the south end to Union Pass on the northern end. Union Pass is somewhere between us and that tall snowcapped peak in the distance.

The Wind River Range it to our south and Absaroka Mountain Range to our north in this location on US-26 between Dubois and Moran Junction in Grand Teton National Park.

We are currently at or near Togwotee Pass and are experiencing visual overload. Joyce said she had tears in her eyes. As for me I am having a hard time dealing with this much snow in late June.
