Golden, ColoradoJune 22, 23 & 24th: Golden, Colorado (just west of Denver). We are in Clear Creek City Park N39° 45.197' W105° 13.193' Golden, Colorado. The campground is located on the south side of 10th street at the end of the road. Clear Creek City Campground is one of the nicest (location wise) campgrounds you can stay in (our opinion). located on Clear Creek 3-blocks from downtown Golden. They have paved interior roads with small backin sites (mature trees are so wonderful); 50-amps, water and sewer, $28.91 per-night 303-278-1437. There is a 2-week max stay before you have to leave the park and they do not take reservations. Astor House Golden, Colorado
Another must do when in Golden is the Astor House tour. The Astor House as we learned has seen a lot of Colorado history. Golden was the Colorado Territory Capital from 1862 to 1867. The territorial government building was next door to the Astor House. It was originally constructed to board the territorial representatives which it did until the territorial capital moved. Colorado was only a territory a very short time (1861 to 1876) Colorado Territory became the state of Colorado in August of 1876. It was granted quick statehood because of all the mineral wealth.
Fossil at the Mineral Museum part of Colorado School of Mines Golden, Colorado
Another must do is a visit to the Mineral Museum located in one of the Colorado School of Mines buildings. We took this picture of a giant fossil sea shell on display outside the museum. Take time to visit the Mineral Museum which is part of the Colorado School of Mines in Golden. They have a wonderful collection and display of a lot of minerals and rocks. The display is impressive. One of the best you will see anywhere.

Golden is noted for its statuary. Almost any way you walk near town some kind of statuary is visible. This one is of a fly fisherman.

Near Golden, Joyce and I spotted deer in some short grass. They weren't hard to spot. These nice buck mule deer were in heavy velvet.

Colorado School of Mines "M" on Lookout Mountain in Golden, Colorado
On top of Lookout Mountain that looks down on Golden is this huge "M" painted with whitewash for visibility during the day and a string of lights at night. Each year CSM Colorado School of Mines freshmen gather for one day and each carry a 10-pound boulder/rock up to the "M". Seniors spend a day whitewashing the huge "M". The picture on the right is what that M looks like at night from downtown Golden.
