St. Andrews State Park: Sea oats & Great Blue Heron
September, 5th thru 13th This travellog covers the first few days of our 9-day visit to Panama City Beach where we stayed in St. Andrews State Park $26.16 for water & 30-amps with a central dump station. The sites feature paved interior roads with sand campsites. St. Andrews State Park Campground has LOCATION and "price". The campground is situated on Grand Lagoon with many sites on the water and all others with a view of the water. In my opinion it doesn't matter if you have one of the sites on the water or not you are so close to the water that it doesn't matter. If you can not find a Florida State Park to stay in you need to be looking for a 1/2 price PPA Campground.
Gator pond & sea oats in St. Andrews State Park
No stay at St. Andrews State Park is complete until you have visited Gator Pond. We always stop by there when in the park to look for the resident alligators and all the bird life that utilize the protected rookery in the middle of the lake. In this picture we thought the sea oats on the far side of the lake were showing off in all their "September" glory.
View looking west from St Andrews State Park with sea oats showcasing the neighboring condos
As are many other State Parks in the Florida Park system St. Andrews State Park is a jewel. It is a small spot of protected coast sandwiched next to the condo-crazy world just outside the gate. This picture reminds us just how special this park is. Those sea oats aren't growing at the condo.

Sea oats featured in view looking east along Grand Lagoon in St Andrews State Park
One thing we have to do when staying in St. Andrews State Park is take a walk along Grand Lagoon to the point where Grand Lagoon joins St. Andrews Bay. You can see from this picture why we like to take this walk.

Beautiful beach scene complete with sea oats and great blue heron in St Andrews State Park
This is the "Point" where Grand Lagoon joins St. Andrews Bay. This great blue heron is keeping watch on us as we enter his territory. This spot is an easy walk from the campground in St Andrews State Park.
One of the Great Blue Herons at St Andrews State Park
It was time for him to leave his fishing spot for a few minutes as we passed.
Not to worry, he just moves about 30-yards back in the sea oats.
Great blue heron retreating to the security of sea oats in St Andrews State Park
He just flies about 100-feet before stopping on a high spot while we pass.
Sea oats & Navy mine sweeper passing by St Andrews State Park
As we neared the point this Navy ship, a mine sweeper I think, was returning from a mission in the gulf. And just think, we are only a short walk along the beach, from our campground in St. Andrews State Park.

And what is time spent at the beach without at least one sunset picture?
It is a tough life, but someone has to do it. VBG
