Monument Lake

Monument Lake on the Scenic Highway of Legends between Stonewall and Cuchara Pass

Just a sign along SR-12 the Scenic Highway of Legends in south central Colorado, letting us know that we are approaching Monument Lake. Monument Lake is owned by the city of Trinidad. It serves as the water supply for Trinidad, located around 35-miles away on I-25.

This is the campground at Monument Lake Resort nestled in the pines at around 8,500'.

Since I pointed out the campground at Monument Lake Resort it might be time to discuss other camping options for this area: Lanthrop State Park a few miles west of I-25 in Walsenburg, or one of two RV-Parks in La Veta, west of Trinidad in Stonewall where there are several RV-Parks, or this campground at Monument Lake Resort.

This sign is on the Highway of Legends that runs from Trinidad west to Cuchara Pass and on to Cuchara and La Veta. Joyce took this picture around Monument Lake to give you an idea of distances. Cuchara Pass is between Stonewall and Cuchara Pass on SR-12 the Highway of Legends in south central Colorado. Cuchara Pass is another 10-miles and the village of Cuchara is another 8-miles beyond the pass.

Monument Lake in the foreground with one of the Spanish Peaks in the background. This is around 8,500' elevation so it is cool. Note the exposed dike in the top right hand corner. We did several travel logs about dikes along the Highway of Legends, and how dikes are formed.
