Wildlife around Sisterdale, TexasBlanco and Sisterdale, TexasApril 16, 2007. Our motorhome at Lady Bird Johnson City Park 3-miles south of Fredericksburg on SR-16; $20 FHU including cable with paved sites. We tend to like Lady Bird Johnson City Park when we are in Fredericksburg because the RV-sites are situated under the canopy of mature pecan trees but there are several more that are good as well. The Fredericksburg RV-Park on Highway street is another good park but it cost more and doesn't have mature trees that provide shade. We visited Blanco on Monday. We stayed in Blanco State Park 5 or 6 years ago but have not stopped there since.
Awesome Axis deer just part of the wildlife in the Texas Hill CountryAs we approached Sisterdale we started seeing axis deer. Axis are an exotic deer introduced into the Texas Hill Country years ago. They have impressive racks and seem to multiply like rabbits. They are no longer confined to exotic game ranches. They roam the countryside in large herds.
This axis deer is a wild deer just like the white tail deer in this region. I know you see this one behind a fence but they jump fences such as this like they aren't even there. By the way every picture that we take from the road is going to have a fence of some kind in it. Small fences like this one keep livestock in but not wildlife like deer.
Axis deer just part of the wildlife in the Texas Hill Country
When we took this picture there must have been 10 or more in view they just wouldn't all fit in the picture. These Axis Deer were in a pasture near Sisterdale, Texas. Again, while they are behind this fence they are by no means captive. They jump fences like this with ease. They are part of the awesome wildlife in the Texas Hill Country.
Wild turkey strolling through Blanco State Park in downtown Blanco, Texas
Wild turkey have been hard to photograph on this trip but not this hen that was walking with us through Blanco State Park in downtown Blanco, Texas. Wild turkey in some parts of the Texas Hill Country are thicker than deer and that is thick folks.
Coyote like this one are a nuisance and shot on sight in Texas
Bounties are even available in some Texas counties. To say coyotes are persona non grata would be an understatement in Texas.
Blackbuck just part of the awesome wildlife in the Texas Hill Country
Blackbuck were imported to game ranches in the Texas Hill Country. They are a type of antelope. Over the years blackbuck have escaped and roam the roadside and open spaces just like native wildlife.

This axis deer was almost grazing on the highway. More notably it did not pay any attention when we stopped the Saturn to get this picture. What kind of sport could it be to hunt this?
