Spanish Peaks of south central Colorado part-2

Spanish Peaks from somewhere around La Veta as seen from the Highway of Legends

Joyce took this picture of the Spanish Peaks from somewhere around La Veta. Things are greener around La Veta than a bit east of here in Walsenburg. Of course we are at a higher altitude and that makes a huge difference.

The Spanish Peaks are almost in line with each other. It was taken somewhere between La Veta and Cuchara on the Highway of Legends

Layers of sedimentary rock visible on the Spanish Peaks as seen from near Cordova Pass

Millions of years ago this area and Great Plains was at the bottom of an inland sea. Thousands of feet of sand, silt, mud, clay, and marine fossils were deposited here over hundreds of millions of years. When the mountain building process began and the area began to rise, these deposits emerged from the water as sedimentary rock. That sedimentary rock is now over 13,000-feet above sea level resting on top of these two peaks.

Several varieties of spruce and other evergreen trees were evident as we climbed the road to Cordova Pass. Cordova Pass was over 11,000 feet.

Spanish Peaks from Lanthrop State Park near Walsenburg, Colorado

Joyce took this picture one evening from our campsite in Lanthrop State Park located a few miles west of Walsenburg.

This picture looking south from the Highway of Legends between Walsenburg and La Veta. The Great Planes can be seen creeping into the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains. A few miles west of here in La Veta grass will be green and we will be at a higher elevation.
