Gros Ventre River flowing past Kelly, Wyoming
The town of Kelly, Wyoming is situated between the Gros Ventre River and Gros Ventre Road with the river on the south side and Gros Ventre Road on the north side. It was the Gros Ventre River that flooded destroying the town of Kelly back in 1927 killing 6-residents. The flood destroyed most of the town, leaving only the church and the schoolhouse standing. The story of the flood that destroyed the town of Kelly is an interesting one involving a huge "landslide". In 1925, following weeks of heavy rain, approximately 50,000,000 cubic yards of rock and debris slid off the north face of Sheep Mountain a few miles upstream of Kelly. The rock and debris slid into a narrow valley formed by the Gros Ventre River. The rock formed a large natural dam, backing up the water and forming Lower Slide Lake. Over time the lake and dam eventually stabilized. Then came heavy snows in the winter of 1926-1927, and the higher than normal snow melt was accompanied by weeks of heavy rain in May 1927. On May 18, 1927 residents started to notice debris from the flooding of the upper valley floating downstream in the river. A group of residents went to the dam and discovered that the lake had overflowed the top of the dam and was beginning to erode it. The warning was given, and most residents of the town evacuated. That warning is why only 6 died. You can visit the Gros Ventre Slide and dam by continuing on Gros Ventre Road east of Kelly. There is a pullout parking area and informational kiosk explaining the geologic event that shaped history in this area back in 1925 and again in 1927.
