Gros Ventre RiverGros Ventre River from bluff upstream of Slide Lake in late June 2011
We have never seen the Gros Ventre River look like this. It is usually a clear mountain creek. This year the Gros Ventre River is muddy as an unusually large snowpack is melting. The Gros Ventre River has flooded huge areas of the alluvial plain in the delta area where it joins the Snake River north of Jackson, Wyoming. Joyce took this picture about 5-miles upstream of Slide Lake on Gros Ventre Road. She was trying to get a better picture of the waterfall you can see in the center of the picture. We just could not position ourselves to get a good picture of that clear waterfall as it joined the Gros Ventre River. Gros Ventre River upstream of Slide Lake and well into the Gros Ventre Mountain Range
The Gros Ventre River is really flowing this year as the exceptional snowfall in the Gros Ventre Mountains melts. We have never seen this much water flowing down the Gros Ventre River. Gros Ventre River from Gros Ventre Road in the Gros Ventre Mountains east of Kelly, Wyoming
Joyce took this picture of the Gros Ventre River from a bluff on Gros Ventre Road just before Red Hills Ranch. If you look closely on the left side of the Gros Ventre River in the upper left of the picture you will see some lush green pasture. That is part of the Red Hills Ranch Property. We met a young cowboy who was breaking and training horses for the owner of this ranch. We enjoyed meeting this young man who came up here with his wife and dog from Utah to spend the summer. If you are interested here is a link to a story we did on him.

The Gros Ventre River is flowing under this bridge on Gros Ventre Road in the Red Hills or Red Cliffs area of the Gros Ventre Mountains east of Kelly, Wyoming.

The further we go on Gros Ventre Road the higher we climb into the Gros Ventre Mountain Range. We can see snow on the mountain just in front of us. As you can see the Gros Ventre River is getting smaller as we get closer to it's headwaters high in the Gros Ventre Mountain Range.
