Dinosaur Tracks on Skyline Drive in Canon City, Colorado

Saturday June 10 through Tuesday June 13 2006:

We are in Pueblo West Campground N38° 20.522 W104° 43.097'. Pueblo West Campground is located on US-50 about 5-miles west of I-25. It is totally gravel with huge pull-thru sites (trees are limited); 50-amps, water and sewer, $20 per-night 719-547-9887. Pueblo West Campground is a combined campground and equestrian facility.

This travel adventure is going to cover dinosaur tracks on Skyline Drive out of Canon City, Colorado.

On US-50 a few miles west of Canon City you will find the entrance to Skyline Drive. It is one of those exciting drives that should be on all "bucket lists". It is really spectacular not only for the view but for the geology.

This cholla plant provides a good indication that this is a desert region receiving only 15-inches of rain per-year.

Skyline Drive west of Canon City, Colorado is a good place to get up close and personal with geology.

The tilted sandstone and dinosaur tracks are items of wonder and amazement. Mountain building forces deep within the earth pushed this strata of sedimentary rock up to an angle approaching 90-degrees.

Dinosaur tracks are imbeded in some of these layers of sedimentary rock.

Remember how the sedimentary rocks had been uplifted to an almost vertical position. Well here is a small exposure of that almost vertical rock. The "bumps" you see on this wall are actually dinosaur tracks. You would normally think of tracks as being indented. But these are bumps. The material that filled in the tracks was harder than the material the tracks were made in. In this relief you are looking at the BOTTOM of the dinosaur track instead of looking down down on the track. How cool is that.

This would be a great place to bring children. Seeing these dinosaur tracks in the rock is a real educational experience.

Remember that these prints are in effect looking UP at the tracks from the bottom.

Long ago dinosaurs walked in soft mud leaving tracks (imprints). Those imprints were filled in with material that would be harder. Thus when erosion took place it washed away the "mud" the tracks were made in leaving the "tracks" which were filled with the harder material.

In this picture it is easy to see the mud the tracks were made in and how the tracks (impressions) were filled with a completely different material.
