Gros Ventre Mountains GeologyNorthern end of the Gros Ventre Mountains in Wyoming
You can tell these sedimentary rocks have been uplifted since they still remain in perfectly horizontal layers. This sedimentary rock exposure is located near the Gros Ventre River east of Kelly, Wyoming. The Gros
Ventre Range is situated west of the Continental Divide in
Wyoming. The
Gros Venture Range is a member of the Rocky Mountain chain.
Located in the western side of Wyoming,
and runs west-east from the town of Jackson
to the Green River at the the northern end of the Wind
River Range.
Geological perspective along the Gros Ventre River east of Kelly, Wyoming
A limestone bluff is visible in the distance. We are about to cross the Crystal Creek bridge deep in the Gros Ventre Mountains east of Kelly, Wyoming.
When the Gros Ventre Range was uplifted layers of sedimentary rock were thrust upward. These layers of sedimentary rock are now being exposed by erosion.
Limestone cliff along the Gros Ventre River deep in the Gros Ventre Wilderness east of Kelly, Wyoming
The limestone nature of the Gros Ventre Range gives it character. The color of this limestone is intriguing. The Gros Ventre River flows at the base of that cliff. This picture was taken about 20-miles east of Kelly, Wyoming off Gros Ventre Road. Where the limestone layers lie on top of the red Chugwater Formation they form "lavender hills". Eroded limestone formation deep in the Gros Ventre Wilderness
Deep beds of limestone and shales are exposed in the higher mountain regions of the Gros Ventre Range.
Millions of years of geology visible in this limestone wall deep in the Gros Ventre Wilderness
It took millions upon millions of years to create the limestone formation you see here cut by the Gros Ventre River deep in the Gros Ventre Mountains. Look closely and you can see the Gros Ventre River flowing along the base of that cliff. Close-up of limestone cliffs exposed by the Gros Ventre River east of Kelly, Wyoming
Some of the limestone is much harder than other layers with the softer layers eroding away much quicker.
