Harbor Walk Restaurants in Key WestSchooner Wharf Bar along Harbor Walk on the Historic Key West Harbor
Schooner Wharf Bar is an extremely popular hangout for tourist and natives alike. Actually, Schooner Wharf is a throw back to the old Key West before million-dollar condos began sprouting up like mushrooms on a stump It is as Key West as a pair of well-worn flip flops and just as comfortable and unassuming. In fact it is just a ramshackle, old, open-sided bar, with a small stage and umbrella-covered tables set up on a gravel patio. The menu isn't anything special. After all Schooners is a bar. The difference is Schooner's seems to always provide good live music on their outdoor stage. The food is good but I think Schooner's draw is the live music and totally laid back atmosphere. When visitors arrive in Key West they want to share in that Island spirit that is so laid back and it is that atmosphere that seems to attract and hold visitors at Schooners.

Turtle Kraals Restaurant along Harbor Walk on Key West Bight Marina
Key West's Turtle Kraals have been around for years, first they were raising sea turtles for food and for the shell. Then it was a turtle soup cannery and a tourist attraction. Now it's a restaurant with a historic tower bar that's a popular spot along Harbor Walk along the Historic Seaport Harbor in Old Town Key West. Turtle Kraals focuses its culinary offerings, on seafood. Cooks blend the cuisine of New Orleans with that of Key West, Cuba and the Bahamas to come up with dishes featuring a wide array of delicate spices. You might also catch their popular turtle races, which are held twice a week. You may also be interested in catching breakfast at Turtle Kraals before you head out on a boating adventure.

Conch Republic Seafood Restaurant and Bar on Harbor Walk around the Historic Key West Harbor
Throughout Key West's colorful history the Historic Key West Seaport, where the Conch Republic Seafood Company now resides, has had a tradition of bringing the bounty of the seas ashore. Sponges, giant sea turtles, shrimp and fish are just a few of the types of cargo that would pass through the Bight weekly. The location where the Conch Republic Seafood is now located has
it's own interesting history. In the 1890's "sponging"
employed hundreds in Key
West, both with the fleet and at jobs ashore. Large "mother
ships" would dock after a few weeks of harvesting sponges and
unload their cargoes. The thousands of sponges bought, sold &
traded were shipped all over the United States. By the early 1900's,
Key West was
considered the Sponge Capital of the Country. In 1949 vast beds of succulent pink shrimp were located just offshore near the Dry Tortugas in the Gulf. As word of the find spread, hundreds of shrimp boats were soon operating out of Key West Bight Marina. At one time there were so many shrimp trawlers at the docks, you could walk the length of the seawall from one boat to another without touching the water! The property on which the Conch Republic Seafood Company now sits was once the Singleton Fish House and Ice Plant. The ice plant once boasted as the largest in the world, allowed for more efficient unloading and processing of the shrimp catch. Each day, at the peak of the shrimp season, dozens of shrimp trawlers unloaded at the docks right behind Conch Republic Seafood Restaurant and Bar. In the warehouse, hundreds of workers stood at long tables in what now serves as the Main Dining Room of the restaurant, where they removed the inedible heads from the shrimp before packing. Shrimping and shrimp processing remained a lucrative business here into the 1980's. Half Shell Raw Bar on Harbor Walk along the Historic Seaport Harbor in Key West

Schooner Wharf Bar along Harbor Walk on Key West Bight Marina
The food is good but I think Schooner's draw is the live music and totally laid back atmosphere. While the Schooner Wharf Bar is advertised as a bar they do serve food. Schooner's is anything but fancy as in nothing more than an outdoor stage set up in an outdoor parking lot. I do not know that it was really a parking lot but it has a gravel floor if you get my drift. Tables with umbrellas are situated around the stage where live music seems to be available around the clock. Click here for more Key West travellogsUntil next time remember how good life is.
