Traveling I-70 through Utah This travel adventure consists of driving west on
I-70 from Fruita,
(Grand
Junction) Colorado to the Utah state line. Then continuing west on I-70
from the Colorado state line to the Green River at Green River, Utah. We stopped
and visited "The
John Wesley Powell Museum" in Green River. Then took US-6 from Green
River to Price, Utah where we stopped for the night. May 24, 2007. We overnighted in the Super Wal Mart parking lot in Price.

Joyce got this picture of the Colorado, Utah border heading west on I-70.
Welcome to Utah
Utah is still reminding us that they hosted the 2002 Olympic Winter Games.
La Sal Mountains as seen from I-70
This is the La Sal Mountains located probably 40 to 50 miles south of I-70 not far into Utah. Remember these are the mountains that are located east of Moab.
Ranch Exit
Out in the forbidding land of eastern Utah we see these unusual (to us) exit signs. Note that this is "Ranch Exit" at mm 193. So travelers aren't disappointed the state of Utah has posted a prominent warning attached to the exit sign "No FACILITIES". The first time we saw exits like this was in Wyoming or Montana, years ago, and we still remember them. These are exits from the interstate that go to a dirt road as soon as you get to the end of interstate property. After thinking about it for a short while we realized the necessity of these exits since few other roads and highways exist in this region.

This is a better picture of one of these "Ranch Exit" signs.
Beavers tail cactus in bloom
Joyce took this picture, of a beavers tail cactus bloom, at a Utah rest stop and information center on I-70.
View from US-6 in Utah
With all that information still still spinning in my head we exited the museum and continued our journey. Shortly after returning to I-70 we exit north on US-6 as we head toward Price, Utah where we plan to spend the night. U.S. 6 southeast of Price is a lonely, barren place.
View from US-6 in Utah
This is Thursday before the big Memorial Day weekend and traffic heading east on U.S. 6 is full of rigs towing boats and or 4-wheelers. The boats are bound for Bullfrog marina on the upper reaches of lake Powell. From the looks of things boats will be wall to wall on Lake Powell this weekend. We have to wonder if anyone will be left in Salt Lake City.
