Crazy Woman Canyon part-1

Crazy Woman Creek flowing past giant boulders in Crazy Woman Canyon southwest of Buffalo, WY

We are in Crazy Woman Canyon southwest of Buffalo, Wyoming today doing one of our scenic drives. I learned about this scenic drive while doing a Google search for scenic drives out of Buffalo, Wyoming. Several individuals had shared pictures and stories about Crazy Woman Canyon. In any event I did some more research then located Crazy Woman Canyon on Street Atlas, our computer mapping program. From there I developed a "scenic drive" for us to take when we were in Buffalo. Now you know why we are on this gravel road slowly making our way through historic Crazy Woman Canyon --- if you are interested in the story behind the name "Crazy Woman": The story behind "Crazy Woman".

To get to Crazy Woman Canyon this morning we drove west out of Buffalo, Wyoming on scenic US-16 like we were heading to Ten Sleep, Wyoming. Around 20-miles from Buffalo we turned left on Crazy Woman Road which meanders east through Crazy Woman Canyon for 6 or so miles then almost instantaneously emerges out of that awesome canyon to a view of the plains that stretch east from the eastern side of the Big Horn Mountains. We kept driving east on Crazy Woman Road after emerging from Crazy Woman Canyon enjoying that view as much as we enjoyed Crazy Woman Canyon.

Crazy Woman Creek is not a large creek as it flows through Crazy Woman Canyon but it sure has carved a spectacular canyon.

Crazy Woman Road through Crazy Woman Canyon is NOT a paved road or a well traveled road. It is a narrow road through a narrow canyon. We drove it in our Saturn automobile but we had to slow down to 5-mph in places where the bumps and ruts dictated that slower speed. It is an awesome drive and one that should be on your bucket list but it isn't a city street.

Joyce took this picture of Crazy Woman Creek out her window as we crossed over that one lane bridge. I do not see the canyon walls, where did they go? Trust me they are on both sides we just can't see them.

This is one of the canyon walls in Crazy Woman Canyon. We squeezed past cracks and vertical walls like this for several miles on Crazy Woman Road as we slowly make our way through the heart of Crazy Woman Canyon.

Crazy Woman Road through Crazy Woman Canyon is definitely a scenic drive you want to add to your bucket list. It is a bit off the beaten path but as you can see it is well worth it.

As you can see in this picture the canyon is widening as we get through the main part of Crazy Woman Canyon on Crazy Woman Road. We are entering the eastern slope of the Big Horn Mountains 20-miles or so southwest of Buffalo, Wyoming. In less than a mile we will no longer be in the Big Horn Mountains. Crazy Woman Road will go around one last turn and when it does we will see beautiful prairie as far as the eye can see to the east.

We popped out of Crazy Woman Canyon a few hundred yards down this road and there was nothing but beautiful prairie visible as far to the east as the eye could see.

If you are like me you are wondering why everything is called "Crazy Woman". I did some research and have written about that name in a travel log about Buffalo, Wyoming.
