Showy Milkweed
Showy Milkweed
Showy milkweed can be found in locations where you would normally
find weeds like, along roadsides, open fields and ditches up to about
7,000 feet. We
found these in an open field in southern Idaho.
Showy Milkweed
Milkweed flowers are unusually shaped. Note how the flowers are arranged in a 5-pointed star pattern. This Showy Milkweed bloom was in a field in Malad Gorge State Park near Hagerman, Idaho.
Showy Milkweed
Joyce photographed this showy milkweed bloom in Malad Gorge State Park in southern Idaho, along the Snake River.
Beetles on Showy Milkweed
Showy milkweeds have a stout stem and most we see are around 3-feet tall. Monarch butterflies lay their eggs on showy milkweed leaves. The eggs hatch as larvae that consume the leaves (and milk), which is toxic. It makes both the caterpillar and the adult butterfly taste terrible, on top of being toxic, to predators.
