Devil's Backbone a geologic "hogback" located west of Loveland, Colorado
Devil's Backbone west of Loveland, Colorado is a true geologic wonder. This is an example of what happens when normal horizontal layers of sedimentary rock are "uplifted" and broken. In the case of Devil's Backbone the sedimentary rock layers are almost vertical. Softer layers of sedimentary rock surrounding this hard rock have long since eroded away leaving this hogback of hard sedimentary rock that has been named Devil's Backbone. Devil's Backbone located west of Loveland, Colorado off US-34
Devil's Backbone is a geologic feature trending north/south on the west side of Loveland, Colorado. It is the remnant of an ancient anticline. Sedimentary rocks created in horizontal layers have been "uplifted" during the time the Rocky Mountains were being formed. In this area sedimentary layers of earth were bent upward until they cracked. The Devil's Backbone is a nearly vertical layer of hard sedimentary rock. Softer layers on either side of Devil's Backbone have eroded away leaving this geologic wonder.
