Coeur d'Alene Scenic Drive
June 28, 29 and 30, 2007.
We are staying in Coeur d'Alene
at Blackwell Island RV Resort
$30 for paved interior roads, FHU including cable and wifi. This is
a top notch RV park that even allows you to wash your RV on site.
Now that is something you do not see very often.
We took what we are calling our "Coeur
d'Alene Scenic Drive" today along the eastern edge of
Coeur d'Alene Lake
to Harrison. South of Harrison we turned north on SR-3. Some of this
drive was through the Coeur d'Alene
Indian Reservation but we do not recall seeing any signs to that effect.
For a short way the road veered away from Coeur
d'Alene Lake. This plateau on the southeast side seemed to
be supporting more hay than other similar areas.
Wildflowers on the plateau on our Coeur
d'Alene Scenic Drive
Some small rises on the plateau were covered with lavender flowers
as seen from our
Coeur d'Alene Scenic Drive.

Some hills had a mixture of yellow, white and lavender flowers on
our Coeur d'Alene Scenic Drive.
Note the date on this road. When Thomas Jefferson sent Lewis &
Clark west in 1804, searching for a water way to the Pacific, they
were specifically looking for a transportation route.
In 1859 this road (Mullan
Road) across Montana,
Idaho & part of Washington
is what connected the eastern & western river systems. Do not
just skip over the Mullan
Road it is indeed a significant piece of American history,
especially important in settlement of the Pacific Northwest.
We have encountered the historic Mullan
Road on multiple occasions. It begins in Ft
Benton, Montana because that is as far as steam boats could
navigate up the Missouri River. Supplies were unloaded at Ft
Benton, Montana in the mid 1850's.... (the Civil War was in
the early 1860's for a time frame) and transported west via wagon
trains. The Mullan
Road was the road of commerce after 1859.
We passed over the paved version of the Mullan
Road when we drove over Mullan
Pass about 20-miles west of Helena,
Montana later in this trip. Plus we stopped in Ft
Benton, Montana later in this trip as well. So we are getting
well immersed in the importance this Mullan
Road had in the early history of the northwest.
Horse ranch near Coeur
d'Alene River as seen from our Coeur
d'Alene Scenic Drive
Joyce captured this picture as we took SR 3 back to I 90. The lake
is most probably Cave Lake or Medicine Lake both located near the
town of Medimont. While we were admiring the view this large herd
of horses started running to the other end of the pasture. They were
just playing follow the leader or some similar game. Whatever the
game they ran around at at full run for about 10 minutes. It was a
spectacular sight.
With the horses out of the picture for a moment Joyce was able to
concentrate on this view across the valley.
Nesting greebes on either Cave Lake or Medicine Lake
from our Coeur d'Alene Scenic
Drive
As we got closer to one of these lakes we began to see the floating
nest of western greebe. Notice that each of these floating nest has
a western greebe sitting on eggs.

Stunning day lillies city park in Coeur
d'Alene a bonus to our Coeur
d'Alene Scenic Drive
Back in Coeur d'Alene
at the waterfront park we were shocked at the size of these day lilies.
