Lido Key off Sarasota, Florida

Places Visited:

Florida: Lido Key near Sarasota

Thursday, December 15 through Wednesday December 21: Lake Manatee State Recreation area 15-miles east of Bradenton on Florida's west coast-- $17 water & 30-amps with central dump station, paved interior roads with dirt sites N27° 28.87' W82° 20.70'

Joyce decided we needed to visit the posh islands or keys near Sarasota so we spent Monday in and around St. Armands Circle and the north end of Longboat Key.

Monk Parakeet in park near St Armands Circle Lido Key, Florida

There is so much to see and do in that area. I enjoy the monk parakeets, pelicans, herons, coconut palm trees, wildlife and exotic tropical vegetation.

Monk parakeets like this one are noisy residents of the islands. They fly around in flocks of 40 or more. When they are feeding in grassy areas they are extremely difficult to see.

Eurasian collared dove in park near St Armands Circle on Lido Key, Florida

Another exotic is the Eurasian collared dove pictured to the right. These large doves are ancestors of caged birds that escaped years ago. They are now well established in many areas around the country.

We spotted this raccoon family in a county park only a few blocks from the upscale shopping area of St. Armands Circle.

Screw pine in yard on Lido Key, Florida

This is a screw pine an exotic tree imported years ago from the West Indes. On the right is the funky looking bloom. You can spot the fruit of this tree if you look for the light green spot almost in the center of the picture on the left.

Tropical foliage on Longboat Key, Florida

Lush tropical foliage like this vine climbing inexorably toward the sun on this large tree are just part of the ambiance on Longboat Key.

Coconut palm on Longboat Key, Florida

Coconut trees are a favorite tree for residents. They do make a beautiful tree but if one of those nuts falls on your head. Ouch!
