California: Saltan Sea Places Visited: We pulled out of Borrego Springs heading to Indio this morning. The road east out of Borrego Springs heads across the Colorado Desert to Salton City on the western bank of the Salton Sea. Joyce posing by the Salton Sea in Salton City, California
We parked the motorhome in the parking lot of the Salton City Visitor Center & Chamber of Commerce. The building was unoccupied. That should have been a hint but we didn't take it. From all the streets we could see on SA-2004 Salton City looked to be a thriving town. As we drove around looking for the marinas we found that it was a virtual a ghost town. Streets were laid out like a planned community that no one ever arrived for. Canals were dug for waterfront homes but few homes dotted the canals. Even the scattered homes did not appear to be occupied. We did find Johnson's RV-Park, restaurant and boat ramp about as far north as the local roads go in Salton City. Johnson's RV-Park appeared to be well occupied unlike the remainder of Salton City. Someone will probably know the story behind Salton City. There has to be a good one. My bet is that someone or some corporation laid out a planned community put in the infrastructure (streets, water, electrical & sewer systems) then couldn't sell the lots. The few houses that were dotted around probably were owned by "the few early purchasers" in that dream community. From Salton City we headed north on SR-86 paralleling the western bank of the Salton Sea.
Irrigated citrus grove on the northwest side of the Salton Sea
Near the northern section of the Salton Sea irrigated fields citrus, grapes and date palms started to appear as did residential communities along the waters edge. The Coachella Valley stretching from the northern shore of the Salton Sea to Palm Springs produces 95% of the world's dates. That volume surprises me since dates are thought of as a product of North Africa and other desert regions of the world. These date groves are wedged in next to the sprawling communities of Indio, Desert Palms, Indian Wells & Palm Springs.
Tuesday, April 26 Fair Grounds RV-Park Indio, California-- $20.00. FHU - 50-amps, Gated & paved interior streets & sites N33° 42.770' W116° 13.436'. Entrance & office is on Arabia Street on west side of fairgrounds, turn in Gate #4 office is in building directly in front of Gate #4. Joyce has us scheduled to visit Joshua Tree National Park tomorrow. It should be a full day. To begin with we are in Indio near I-10 exit 142 and need to begin our scenic drive into Joshua Tree National Park at I-10 exit 115 SR-62. Simple math indicates that we are 27-miles away from where our scenic drive starts. Joyce got much of the information for today's scenic drive out of the Readers Digest book The Most Scenic Drives in America. For the most part it covers Joshua Tree National Park but it has several items of interest before and after Joshua Tree National Park. You will want to view that travel log of Joshua Tree National Park as well as the one one covering Indio and the Coachella Valley.
