Shell Falls on US-14 in Wyoming

Shell Creek at Shell Falls on US-14 in Shell Canyon east of Greybull, Wyoming in the Big Horn Mountains

This isn't the actual falls it is Shell Creek after it fell over the 120-foot falls. The steep walls of igneous rock on both sides has been worn smooth by Shell Creek over millions of years. Shell Creek and Shell Falls are following an ancient fault that created a crack in this bed rock that is over 2.5-billion years old.

This is another view of Shell Creek below the main falls as it flows through those steep walls of igneous rock (granite I think). Keep in mind that Shell Creek is following an old fault or crack in this bed rock.

An awesome view of Shell Creek at Shell Falls and the spectacular gorge that has been created over millions of years.

Another view of Shell Creek, deep in Shell Canyon and a few hundred feet downstream of Shell Falls flowing through that fault line in the igneous bed rock of Shell Canyon. Breath taking is what comes to mind.

Joyce took this picture looking straight down into the gorge from a spot on the viewing platform at the Forest Services Interpretive Center or Visitor Center if you will. The National Forest Service has provided the public with an ample parking lot and clean rest rooms at their Visitor Center. In addition they have installed a variety of kiosk explaining geology and plant life both at Shell Falls and in Shell Canyon.

Editors note: Make use of those rest rooms. They are the only ones you are going to see for a long time. :-)

Shell Falls and Shell Canyon would be a great stop on the way to or from Yellowstone, National Park or from Cody, Wyoming.

Shell Canyon and Shell Falls are about an hour and a half, 75 miles, west of Sheridan, Wyoming on US-14. Continuing west from Shell Falls on US-14 will take you through Greybull, Wyoming in around 25-miles then Cody, Wyoming and on into the east gate of Yellowstone, National Park.

If you are in an RV you probably should NOT be traveling across the Big Horn Mountains on US-14 that warning stated another way would be: the grades between Sheridan, Wyoming on the east and Greybull, Wyoming on the west are wicked and long and NOT a good idea for RV's. I can tell you that we do NOT drive our motorhome across the Big Horn Mountains on US-14 or US-14a or US-16.

There should be no issue for automobiles that are in good condition.
