Shell to Greybull to Lovell, Wyoming

Chimney Rock a lone hoodoo visible to the south as we approach Shell, Wyoming on US-14

We spotted Chimney Rock which to us is a hoodoo or butte just after emerging from Shell Canyon. Chimney Rock is one of the geologic attractions in this area just like Shell Canyon and Shell Falls which we have just experienced.

These turkey plus others that are not in the picture meandered across US-14 as we were entering Shell, Wyoming. I stopped and took pictures as did traffic headed in the other direction.

After crossing US-14 these turkey meandered down this gravel road and finally into a wooded area.

Sunflower field around Greybull, Wyoming

We saw a good number of sunflower fields around both Greybull and Lovell, Wyoming.

Warning sign on US-14a as we leave Lovell, Wyoming heading east on US-14a

This sign is warning motorist heading east on US-14a that there are steep grades 20-miles ahead. The sign was on the outskirts of Lovell, Wyoming. US-14a heads east out of Lovell, Wyoming where it ascends the steep western slope of the Big Horn Mountains. US-14a reaches a maximum elevation of 9,430-feet and is closed during the winter. We saw snow on the ground in mid-August.

This is the steep grade on US-14a that the warning sign back in leave Lovell, Wyoming

The gray almost horizontal streak across that mountain is US-14a climbing the western side of the Big Horn Mountains. That is a 6% or better grade on US-14a and it continues climbing for around 15-miles. This was mid-August and we saw snow on the ground when we reached the summit. US-14a is NOT a route you want to take in an RV. It is a really wicked grade for miles and miles.
