Seven Mile Bridge on US-1 in Florida KeysRemnant of Flagler's old RR Bridge that parallels the new 7-mile bridge on US-1
Joyce took this picture from our motorhome as we traveled on US-1 in the Florida Keys. Note all the birds that utilize the old bridge for refuge as well as nesting in some cases.
Flag flying on Pigeon Key that the 7-mile bridge passes close to around midway across
Pigeon Key is located about 1/2 way across the 7-mile bridge. Seven Mile Bridge passes by Pigeon Key without actually connecting to it. Seven Mile Bridge on US-1 (Overseas Highway) in the Florida Keys
Joyce took this picture out the front windshield of our motorhome as we made our way across the Seven Mile Bridge on the Overseas Highway (US-1) in the Florida Keys. Note the old RR Bridge originally constructed by Henry Flagler that was later converted to a vehicle bridge.

View of both the old and new Seven Mile Bridges on the Overseas Highway in the Florida Keys
This is one section of the Seven Mile Bridge that closely parallels the old Seven Mile Bridge originally constructed by Henry Flagler for his Rail Road connecting Key West with the mainland of Florida. The old RR bed was converted into a highway after the RR abandoned it.
Pigeon Key can be seen about midway across the Seven Mile BridgePigeon Key is a small 5-acre island located off the Seven Mile Bridge, at approximately mile marker 45, west of Marathon in the Florida Keys. Some old buildings remain on Pigeon Key from the old days and some of them are on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Spanish originally named the island "Cayo Paloma" or "Pigeon Key". Legend has it that it was named for large flocks of White-crowned pigeons which once roosted there. If you are a birder and have never seen or heard of a "White Crowned Pigeon" don't be alarmed, they are only found in the continental United States in the Florida Keys and extreme south Florida where they are known to breed in coastal red mangrove thickets. The white crowned pigeon looks like a rock dove (common pigeon) with a white skull cap.

Joyce was busy taking pictures as we crossed over the Seven Mile Bridge in the Florida Keys. This picture shows both the old and new bridges as they parallel each other.
