Wading bird roost at Galati Docks on Anna Maria Island

July 13, 14 and 15th

This is another travellog that has nothing at all to do with RV'ing. I am on Anna Maria Island with my son and his father in law Steve. We are here to take Steve's 60' yacht, Smilin Time, across the Gulf to Destin, Florida. When we arrived on Anna Maria the wind was blowing a gail so we had to postpone our departure. We spend the remainder of this day and most of the next day waiting for the wind to subside. During this time I had an opportunity to take some pictures of the sunset and wading birds that roost on the spoil Island at Galati Docks on Anna Maria Island.

Back at the Galati dock with nothing but time on our hands could be a bad thing. But spending the night on a yacht docked in Anna Maria isn't the worst thing that can happen. I took the time to enjoy the spoil island located behind our dock space. All types of wading birds have adopted the island for roosting and as a rookery. As the sun starts to sink in the sky birds from all around the area fly in and make preparations for the night.

This white ibis was one of the first to arrive and claim his overnight roost. This roost is located within 20-feet of the dock behind our boat.

Looking to the west from our dock the sun is going down behind some of the dark clouds in the weather system that has the Gulf so angry.

This cormorant has claimed a perch on the limb of a mangrove tree with the rising moon to keep him company.

The old axiom about "red sky at night sailors delight" isn't holding true on this night. The Gulf was no delight at all, and with the wind blowing like it is we may have trouble getting out tomorrow morning. Right now we are just enjoying the view.

These cormorants are preparing for the night on their nest. Actually, there are two nest in this picture. Look closely and you will see another nest with a large cormorant sitting in it. Those are actually cormorant chicks in the picture above. They will be flying away in the next few days. Even now they are as large as their parents. I suspect that is a chick on the bottom nest as well.

As the sun sinks in the western sky this snowy egret makes one last effort to get a snack before joining the others in the mangroves behind our boat at the Galati Docks on Anna Maria Island.

Not far froom the Galati Docks on Anna Maria Island is the Rod & Reel pier & restaurant. The Rod & Reel pier & restaurant has been recommended for lunch so that is where we headed. We enjoyed our lunch, the food was good but the air conditioning wasn't adequate. I must say the key lime pie was good. If you find yourself in Anna Maria you can find the Rod & Reel pier & restaurant by locating the municipal pier & restaurant. From the municipal pier & restaurant turn to the north/west and stay along the water. About 3-blocks north of the municipal pier there will be a road that turns to the right ---- you have to turn on that road to stay on the water. You will find Rod & Reel pier & restaurant within 3 or 4 blocks of that turn.

Back at the Galati Dock this pelican was resting in the mangroves behind our boat.

Fortunately the wind subsided and we were able to head out into the Gulf of Mexico later in the afternoon. Two hundred and fifty miles and 30-hours later we arrived in Destin.
