We visited Emerson Point Preserve on Sneads Island. This was a beautiful Preserve with miles of walking trails along lagoons, rivers, estuaries and bays. This was a place we will visit again. While we were in the preserve Joyce and I took a long walk along the trails through this pristine estuary.

It was late in the afternoon on this cloudy day and the shadows dancing on this still lagoon beckoned our camera.

Somewhere in the backwater along one of the trails we stumbled upon this ibis roost.

Note the dark tannin color of the water in the picture to your left as contrasted with the extremely clear water in the picture below. Also notice the vegetation in both pictures. They were taken less than 200 yards apart.

Remember that this is an estuary where fresh and salt water mix. The rich tannin color in this mostly fresh water comes from rotting leaves and other vegetation. Note the reeds and grasses along the bank.

Clear lagoon in Emerson Point Preserve on Sneads Island, Florida

The crystal clear water in this picture is because an incoming tide is bringing clear salt water from Tampa Bay. It was easy to see fish swimming in the 8' to 10' depths of this lagoon. As for the vegetation note the pencil like roots of the black mangrove on the far bank.
