Mike got excited when he spotted this sedimentary rock with a dike running through it. It is certainly an extremely small dike but a dike none the less.

Dikes form when liquid rock (magma) from deep in the earth pushes upward cracking overlying rock. In this case there was sedimentary rock between the liquid rock (magma) and the surface. As pressure built up the sedimentary rock cracked and the liquid magma entered the crack creating a dike. The light colored streak in this rock is the dike.

Walking trails in Rockerfeller Preserve take you along and across this creek. There is a lot of snow melt still flowing off the Teton Range and it is mid-July.

This creek will empty into the Snake River about one-mile from here. The water we see here will, in time, make its way to the Pacific Ocean via the Snake River then the Columbia River.
