The is the sign you see when leaving SR-28 in Wyoming on your way to Atlantic City

We were traveling west on Wyoming SR-28 on our way to Atlantic City and South Pass City. This is the sign that greeted us at our turn off SR-23.

If you are RV'ers note that there are two BLM campgrounds nearby.

Atlantic City Road......yes the road to Atlantic City, Wyoming is gravel

Gravel roads like Atlantic City Road are common in Wyoming. Actually they are just fine especially since this area does not get much rain.

This is probably an Atlantic City residence but I do not know that for sure.

Atlantic City, Wyoming is located on a gold-bearing vein. In the fall of 1868 mines literally surrounded Atlantic City. The mines supported a thriving business community consisting of normal businesses plus sawmills and blacksmith shops. Atlantic City had beer breweries and one of the Wyoming Territory's first public schools.

Boom rapidly let to bust and the town faltered. A French capitalist, Emile Granier, revived mining interests in the late 1880's and early 1890's with a short-lived hydraulic mining operation. The early 1900's saw another boom as a New York firm constructed the Dexter Mill, a large modern milling and recovery facility in Atlantic City. Like the other attempts it met with failure also. During the Great Depression a dredge operation was an exceedingly profitable operation and a blessing to a depressed local economy. The scars are still visible from that dredge operation.

Today, Atlantic City is a community of resilient souls where modern homes coexist with historic log cabins in one of Wyoming's oldest cities.

Two men & two horses near Atlantic City, Wyoming

Atlantic City Wyoming

We stopped and talked to these two men. One of their horses had come up lame because of a rock bruise. They were traveling the Continental Divide and were headed north into the Wind River Range.

They told us they had started their journey in Rock Springs a week or so ago. Today they were headed into Atlantic City for a bath. They joked about smelling so bad their horses might run off. They wanted a hotel room with hot water and some decent food.

I do not remember how far they planned to travel on the Continental Divide Trail but they were certainly headed into some rugged country after they left here.

If you are a bit confused about the location we are only about 10-miles from the Continental Divide at South Pass. And to answer your question that "South Pass" would be the same South Pass that wagon trains on the Oregon Trail crossed over.
