The Sidney Lanier Bridge is impressive to say the least. The center section spans 1,250' with the bridge deck 203' above the water.

The Port of Brunswick is the fourth-largest automobile port in the eastern United States.

It was named for poet Sidney Lanier.

The Sidney Lanier Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge constructed after the other bridge was destroyed. The current bridge was put into operation in 2003.

The old bridge was severely damaged in 1972 when the ship African Neptune struck it, causing parts of the bridge to collapse and causing several cars to fall into the water resulting in ten deaths. Then in 1987 the bridge was struck by the Polish freighter Ziemia Bialostocka.

Since 20 large ships enter or exit the harbor each day, the old lift bridge was often closed for many hours each day. In shrimping season, the bridge would be raised many more times. Of course this resulted in traffic across the old bridge on US-17 being backed up. Another key reason for building this new bridge was that modern ocean going ships were being constructed larger than what the old lift bridge would allow through.

How do you like this view as we cross over the South Brunswick River on the Sidney Lanier Bridge?

The cable ties on the Sidney Lanier Bridge remind me of the magnificent Sunshine Skyway Bridge over Tampa Bay.
