Buffalo Chip & Full Throttle Saloon - Sturgis, South DakotaJuly 6 through 13, 2009 Buffalo Chip & Full Throttle Saloon - SturgisThe Black Hills of South Dakota are full of fun places like Sturgis and the Full Throttle Saloon, or the Buffalo Chip, then there is Boondocks and the old mining town of Lead. We are camped near Custer State Park and the town of Custer in the southern part of the Black Hills at Custer's Gulch RV-Park. It is an OK commercial campground just like dozens of others in this area.
Full Throttle Saloon Sturgis, South DakotaThis is the Full Throttle Saloon billed as the largest Saloon in the world and I can believe it after walking around the grounds. You might think that the world's largest saloon would be in a big city but this is Sturgis, South Dakota home to the world famous motorcycle rally that takes place in Sturgis each year in early August. I am sure many saloons have more annual attendance but for a week to 10-days I can only imagine the crowd that must gather here. The old bridge is a deck as well as a roof over a huge bar. Look under the yellow sign in the middle of the picture. It is another old bridge very similar to this one. Businesses such as T-shirt, and biker gear shops operate out of temporary places under the bridge while the bridge itself is a deck to hold patrons. The day we stopped in to look the place over there weren't 20-people in the place so it isn't your traditional saloon that does a booming business year round. My guess is that it would be pretty "dead" 350-days a year. But oh my goodness, sure enough "Katie-Bar-the door" those other 15 days.
Full Throttle Saloon Sturgis, South Dakota
Cars are parked in front of the Full Throttle Saloon now but the spaces are marked for motorcycles. This is early July, the motorcycle will arrive in early August. This is Sturgis, South Dakota and Sturgis is home to the famous motorcycle rally. I did not see ANY automobile parking in this parking lot. It was ALL marked for motorcycles. I have no idea where folks in automobiles park during "bike week". Buffalo Chip Sturgis, South Dakota
Just down the highway (remember we are in Sturgis) is the legendary Buffalo Chip another venue that attracts thousands of motorcycle enthusiast each year.
Buffalo Chip stage Sturgis, South Dakota
This is the main stage at the Buffalo Chip. I can only imagine the fun that has taken place here and will take place here again this August. The Buffalo Chip was RV friendly. They had hundreds of spaces with electrical connections plus a several hundred acre pasture to hold hundreds more for dry camping & tent campers. Buffalo Chip has a web site that is interesting, check it out if you are interested. Click here for more South Dakota travellogsUntil next time remember how good life is.
