Firehole River in Yellowstone National Park

August 18-21, 2007.

We are staying in Grizzly RV-Park in West Yellowstone, Montana just out the west gate of Yellowstone National Park. We had reservations this time for a back in FHU backin site for $37. Grizzly is a nice park, the nicest campground in the area. Bottom line is if you are planning to visit WEST YELLOWSTONE during July thru Aug-15 you need a reservation as every campground in the area is FULL. After August 15 you can have your choice of campgrounds with no reservations. Grizzly RV-Park is the "BEST" campground in West Yellowstone and as you might suspect it is also the most expensive. If you are looking for a MUCH cheaper alternative try the PPA PassPort America Campground a few miles west of town. That PPA Campground (Pass Port America) is really nice and the sites have great views plus it will cost you less than half what you will pay at Grizzly.

Our son and grandson are spending the week with us touring Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone. Come join us for some fun.

The Firehole River flows north approximately 21 miles from its source in Madison Lake on the Continental Divide to join the Gibbon River at Madison Junction in Yellowstone National Park. The Madison River is formed a Madison Junction when the Gibbon River and Firestone River meet.

This one is part of the "Cascades of the Firehole" in Firehole Canyon.

We were sightseeing on the Firehole River loop just south of Madison Junction.

This is some of the awesome geology displayed in volcanic rocks visible on the Firehole River loop.

This is actually a fault where the earth has cracked under pressure. You can see the two different types of strata and where it fault is.

This cliff shows a flood of lava in cross-section. The rhyolite cliff is pocked with volcanic gas bubbles.

After the volcanic eruption cracks in the plateau oozed lava for hundreds of thousands of years. The most recent magma eruption was only 60,000 years ago.

The Firehole River flows through the Upper Geyser Basin, which contains the world-famous geyser Old Faithful. The river was named by early trappers for the steam that makes it appear to be smoking as if on fire.

The Madison River is formed at the junction of the Gibbon and Firehole rivers at Madison Junction.

The Madison River is only 183 miles long.

The Madison is a headwater tributary of the Missouri River.

Actually three rivers meet at Three Forks, Montana to form the Missouri River. The Madison River, the Jefferson River and the Gallatin River meet and form the Missouri River.

The headwaters for the Firehole River is on the Continenetal Divide at Madison Lake.
