Albeni Falls Dam, & Sandpoint, Idaho

Priest River, Priest Lake, Albeni Falls Dam, & Sandpoint, Idaho

July 2, 2007.

We are staying in Hi De Ho RV Park, in Sandpoint, Idaho $32.40 gravel interior roads, FHU including cable and wifi. This is an OK RV Park, but possibly your best bet when staying in the Sandpoint area.

Lumber mills such as this one in Priest River, Idaho is typical of almost all northern Idaho towns.

This is a typical northern Idaho scene. I think Joyce took this picture between the town of Priest River and Priest Lake.

Near Priest Lake we came across this storm damage that had not yet been cleared. I hope you remember us writing about the severe storm that rolled across Coeur d'Alene Lake while we were on a cruise, well this is what the storm did as it rolled north.

The storm damage in this area was pretty severe from that storm we experienced on Coeur d'Alene Lake yesterday.

I think we counted 9-trees that fell across the road in this spot. According to the weather bureau this thunder storm had gusts of 60 to 70 mph. Yes, this is the same storm that were in on Coeur d'Alene yesterday.

This picture was taken near Prist Lake, Idaho.

Priest Lake

We had to take at least one picture of Priest Lake so this is it. If we would have driven along the shore up either the east or west shore views would have been better.

I think this is the Old Northern Inn in Coolin, a small community on the southeastern shore of Priest Lake.

This picture was taken from the visitor center at Albeni Falls Dam and Power generating facility, on the Pend Oreille River a few miles west of Priest River, Idaho. The bridge across the Pend Oreille River is a rail road bridge. Those are two huge ponderosa pines.

Albeni Falls Dam

Albeni Falls Dam

Albeni Falls became Albeni Falls Dam in 1955. The region had experienced and increased need for water storage and electricity to support the growing shipbuilding and aluminum industries downriver. To meet these growing needs Congress authorized the dam in 1950 and construction began in 1951. A log chute was included as log drives on the river were still a common practice. Boommen stood on floating log booms poking and prying the logs through the chute to flow downstream to the mills.

On our return to Sandpoint we stopped in several National Recreation areas along the Pend Oreille River. This picture is representative of the area along the river between Newport, Washington and Sandpoint, Idaho.

Northwest Handmade furniture

Northwest Handmade had a shop in downtown Sandpoint where they showcased a wide variety of unique, rustic furniture. I enjoyed walking through the store.

Across the street in downtown Sandpoint is the Coldwater Creek "Home-Store". It seems this is where the Coldwater Creek brand got its start, for those of you familiar with the Coldwater Creek Brand.
