Gas Station Safety

Safety Issues concerning operation of refrigerator, heater & water heater while driving:

Most motorhomes roll down the highway with their refrigerator on. For the vast majority of them that means that their refrigerator is operating in the propane mode. Of course that would mean there was an open flame. The same would go if their water heater was on as well as their heater.

An open flame in a service station is asking for big trouble. Now you know why I am calling your attention to this safety issue. You need to turn these propane appliances off before you pull into a service station.

Most RV'ers especially motorhomes travel with their refrigerator on. Some are even operating their propane heaters and or propane water heater. Refrigerator, water heaters and forced air heaters have one thing in common------an open flame. The absolute last thing RV'ers want to do is pull into a service station with those open flames. Have someone riding in the motorhome with you assure that all propane appliances are turned off prior to entering a service station.

Now that you have turned all propane appliances OFF you have another issue that you need to address. And that would be remembering to turn those appliances back on. You really do not want to turn your refrigerator off and forget to turn it back on. Need I say more?

Joyce and I write a note and put it on the floor of our motorhome reminding us to turn each of these appliances back on upon exiting the service station. We can not help but see that big note in the middle of the floor when we get back in the motorhome. Joyce sits on the couch while I drive away from the pumps. Once clear of the pumps, but before we return to the highway, Joyce turns the refrigerator back on and returns to her navigator station.

I hope that I have made you think about this very important safety issue.
