This lupine is known by many different names such as; Coastal Lupine, Florida Lupine or Sky-Blue Lupine. It is early May 2010 and we are visiting Panama City Beach in Florida's Panhandle. Florida Lupine is in full bloom on empty sand lots all over the sand hills.

In Florida, coastal lupine or Florida lupine can be spotted in dry, nutrient-deficient soil found in sandhills, along roadsides and in open areas.

Joyce took this picture on an undeveloped lot. This healthy sky-blue lupine is living where the vast majority of normal yard plants would not survive for a week.

Coastal or Florida lupines have been known to dry up and die immediately after flowering. Florida lupines and sky-blue lupines propigate by seed spread by the wind or by animals and birds.

Lupine seed pods hang like pea pods on the plant after flowers have faded.

Later this summer we will try to get pictures of the seed pods and update this page.

When the pods dry they explode and seeds go flying in all directions.

Coastal lupine leaves are both fuzzy and gray-green. Take time to rub the leaves between your fingers. You will understand the fuzzy feeling used to describe the texture of Florida lupine leaves.

Joyce took this picture to show the poor soil conditions that coastal lupine thrives in. Note that it is growing next to a wild yucca. As we all know yucca is considered a desert plant. While the Panhandle of Florida is not a desert sandy soil in the Panhandle certainly presents a desert environment.

Another picture of yucca and sky-blue lupine.

This just documents how coastal lupine thrives in poor sandy soil.
