Some consider the orchid tree to be the most beautiful tree in the world. Whether it is "The Most Beautiful" doesn't really matter. The orchid tree when in bloom is staggeringly beautiful.

Just imagine a tree full of blooms like this.

The orchid tree or (purple orchid tree) can bloom like this for months.

Orchid trees are rather small most only around 20' but some do get 40' tall. The ones we say are around 10 to 20 ft at the crown.

Check out the leaves, they resemble a cows foot so that is a rather unique feature. However, when you see the orchid tree in bloom you will not even realize it has leaves on the tree.

Look for the leaf on the left side that that looks like a cows foot.

They probably grow in other places but we see them in south Florida when we visit in the winter time.

I think they are listed as a subtropical plant.

The flowers are resemble showy orchids, with five irregular, usually slightly overlapping petals in shades of magenta, lavender or purplish blue.

The petals of an orchid tree bloom remind me of the petals of a passion flower.

The orchid tree usually starts to bloom in late winter while the tree is bare of leaves.

Blooming continues until early summer.

Note that I said the orchid tree starts to bloom in late winter when the tree is bare of leaves. Well the orchid tree is a "briefly-deciduous" tree meaning that it drops last years leaves then immediately sprouts new leaves. Thus it is "briefly-deciduous". How is that for a new term?
