The Altamaha River basin drains nearly one quarter of the state of Georgia, in all the Altamaha River's drainage basin is around 14,000 square miles in size. This makes it one of the larger river basins on the US Atlantic coast. It is the third largest contributor of fresh water to the Atlantic Ocean from North America.
