Henderson Beach State Park
March 1 & 2, 2008
We stopped at Henderson Beach State Park in Destin. Henderson Beach State Park is one of our favorite camping destinations. If you are in the area it is a good choice. When we arrived in Destin Joyce had read some advertising and found some live music at Destin Commons. We didn't stay at Henderson Beach State Park very long before heading to Destin Commons and the live music.
Dune walk over at Henderson Beach State Park
The walk from our campground to the beach is on a "dune-walkover". The walk on that walkover is part of the ambiance of Hendereson Beach State Park..

Sandpipers frolic in tidal pools as twilight envelops on the beach.
The surf is angry at Henderson Beach State Park today
Well, that axiom of "red sky at night" didn't ring true. Small craft warnings were flying today.

Joyce is standing next to beach warning flags. When this red flag combination is flying on the beach swimming is prohibited. Notice that two red flags are flying. Not only is it a "High Hazard" warning but a "Water Closed to Public" warning.
This sign at Henderson Beach explains the warning flags
This sign explains the beach warning flag system.
If you are wondering about the blue #4 Dangerous Marine Life flag that warns of things like jelly fish, stingrays, sharks etc., in the surf. This isn't a swimming pool and as such dangerous maring life will on occasion make the surf unsafe.
Angry surf at Henderson Beach State Park
This is the rough surf those signs were warning about.
Angry waves at Henderson Beach State Park
Angry waves blowing in off the gulf. Boats stayed in port today.

Even when looking away from the sun the surf makes a perfect picture.
Henderson Beach State Park is an ideal place for photographers
Joyce got a really good shot of this sandpiper actually standing still for a nanosecond.
This would be a good picture to fram in our living room or den.
Storm clouds moved in at Henderson Beach State Park as the day progressed
As it got later in the day a heavy cloud cover moved in.

This gull is flying into the wind but not making much forward progress.
